How is the CO2 saving determined?

The CO2 saving is based on a saving of 57 g per 1 kg of hot-dip galvanized steel strip at the Wuppermann site in Moerdijk, the Netherlands, compared to the standard galvanizing process on the market. More information on the underlying study "Environmental impact of the Wuppermann Group's 'Heat to coat' strip galvanizing process" by the Fraunhofer UMSICHT Institute on behalf of Wuppermann AG from July 2020 can be found here.

How is the conversion into CO2 equivalents done?

CO2 storage of trees: The calculation assumes a binding of 10 tons of CO2 per year in one hectare of mixed forest. Depending on the tree species, there are 80 to 200 trees per hectare of forest. For mixed forest, the above calculation assumes 140 trees per hectare.
Driving kilometers by car: According to the German Federal Motor Transport Authority, the CO2 emissions of passenger cars in Germany in 2019 were 157 g/km.
Annual emissions per capita: According to the Federal Environment Agency, the average CO2 emissions in Germany in 2017 were 11 tons per capita.
