Győr-Gönyű, Hungary / Leverkusen, Germany, 25 September 2017 – Wuppermann Group was celebrating the official opening of the new production site for flat products in the Hungarian port of Győr-Gönyű. With an investment volume of more than 110 million Euros, the family-owned steel company has built four production and logistics halls with a total area of around 33,000 m² on the 100,000 m² plot since being granted planning permission in May 2015. The heart of the facility is the ultra-modern combined pickling and hot-galvanising plant with a processing capacity of 500,000 tonnes of steel per year. The site now has a workforce of more than 200 employees.
The steel processor welcomed around 500 guests at the new site for the opening ceremony. In addition to the entire Management Board, members of the Supervisory Board and shareholders of Wuppermann AG as well as the two managing directors of Wuppermann Hungary Kft., Mario Dorfer and Terry Flokstra, representatives of the Hungarian government, in the form of Levente Magyar, Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs, Ákos Kara, Secretary of State for Infocommunication and Consumer Protection and Gábor Major, Mayor of the Municipality of Gönyű, was attending the ceremony, alongside customers, suppliers and employees.
"We are not only celebrating the opening of our new plant in Hungary, but also a strategic milestone for the whole Wuppermann Group. With Wuppermann Hungary, we are, on the one hand, consolidating our core business – the processing of hot-rolled strip steel – and, on the other hand, the location in Eastern Europe opens up the opportunity of tapping into completely new markets or providing a better service to existing customer relationships in this region," said Dr C. L. Theodor Wuppermann, Spokesman of the Management Board of Wuppermann AG. "Moreover, with our ultra-modern production facilities in the Hungarian site, we are raising our flat products to a new quality level, which will clearly benefit our clients."
The Wuppermann Group in Hungary also receives support from two important partnerships. Shortly after the foundation stone was laid in May 2015 Welser, a leading manufacturer of special steel and non-ferrous metal profiles and modules, joined forces with Wuppermann Hungary. The contracts between the two traditional family companies in the steel industry allow for a 25.1 percent participation in Wuppermann Hungary by Welser Profile Beteilgungs GmbH on the one hand and large-scale purchases of pickled and galvanised slit strip by Welser Profile Austria GmbH on the other hand. In early 2016 the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), based in London, followed as a shareholder with a participation of 20 per cent in line with Hungarian law.
